Where does the nickname "The Fort" come from?
Fort Worth is actually named after General William Jenkins Worth who was a war hero in the Mexican American War. He proposed building 10 Forts to protect the Texas western front. Major Ripley Arnold established one of the Forts on June 6, 1849, by the mouth of the Clearfork of the Trinity River. He named it in honor of General William Jenkins Worth. The Fort would go on to become the birthplace of the City of Fort Worth.
